This was all about hope and finding the light in the dark. “The Pit” focuses on a young prisoner, Crux, who is forced to dig for kyber by the Empire and plans an escape for his people when they are abandoned. This time we see our main characters looking to the memory of their mother’s strength and with that, they can beat the Empire together. Usually, when we see characters looking to the dead for help in Star Wars it’s through the force. Koten and Tichina are both force-wielders like their mother, and I liked that the force had nothing to do with their mother still being with them in their eyes. The stars also kept the paintings alive, keeping the memory alive of those who have passed. This episode felt very focused on one of my favorite Star Wars lines, “No one’s ever really gone.” Koten and Tichina’s people believed that after you die you become a star that watches over you. Koten and Tichina in “In the Stars” (Disney+) I love the claymation style, the characters, and scenery were beautifully detailed. The animation in this one was my favorite out of the three episodes. They continue to fight for their survival until they are discovered by Imperial forces. “In the Stars” is about two sisters, Koten and Tichina, who are the last of their kind since the Empire took over their homeworld. “In the Stars” – Punkrobot Studios from Chile I loved the horror aspect that Cartoon Saloon has brought to Star Wars with this short and would love to see more projects like this. In Irish and Celtic folklore, a Banshee is a supernatural being whose wailing scream at night was believed to foretell the death of a family member of the person who heard it. I love that this story was based on Irish folklore with the Screecher being a Banshee. Usually, the shorts are enough for me but I would love to see a part two to this one. After she defeated the Screecher and the Sith showed up to take her away, it started glowing red indicating that it was a beacon the Sith used. I was not expecting this 15-minute short to have a Sith plot twist, but I loved it!ĭaal’s necklace was a focal point throughout this episode, something I found myself very curious about. I thought Daal and her friends would find something in the cave and end up running away together. I thought this episode was going to just be about found family like many Star Wars stories. Daal and the Screecher in “Screecher’s Reach” (Disney+) The themes of the dark side and the light side are beautifully drawn in this episode and add to Daal’s struggle with wanting more in her life. The animation in “Screecher’s Reach” is a 2D style with beautiful watercolor-like scenery. “Screecher’s Reech” is about a young girl, Daal, and her friends who work in a factory venturing out to a legendary cave with a dark pull. “Screecher’s Reach” – Cartoon Saloon from Ireland Here are my thoughts on “Screecher’s Reach”, “In the Stars”, and “The Pit” from Volume 2. Be sure to check out Vin’s reviews for “The Spy Dancer”, “The Bandits of Golak”, and “Aau’s Song”, and Wiktor Reinfuss’ reviews for “Sith”, “I Am Your Mother”, and “Journey to Dark Head”. With there being so many animation styles and stories this season we have split up reviews into three parts. It makes you realize the galaxy, and our own world is a beautiful and rich place. It’s beautiful to watch different countries include their cultures in Star Wars. I hope they continue to include more for next season. I love that Lucasfilm decided to reach out to more studios for season 2. Star Wars: Visions Volume 2 has brought us more Star Wars stories from around the world.

In the fifth and sixth Q&A livestreams, it was revealed that Joy Kill is male. When test running Chapter 4, Vince confirmed Joy Kill to be the enemy who caused him the most deaths in the chapter. This isn't the case for any other bosses so far. Their name is shared with the OST's title for their boss encounter. For the rest of the scene, it stands there and watch Doug getting beat up, marked by Malak, and thrown back into the portal. Joy Kill's relationship with the Joy Joy Gang's clones is mostly unknown, but it does allow them to deal with Doug and take Joy Kill's composing members' place as the new Joy Joy Gang.īehavior Chapter 4 Mascot Mayhem Boss Battle I īefore Doug was able to reach the portal, Joy Kill escapes the facility and jumps in front of him and tells him that he was so close while walking towards him to get beaten up by Lucky, Hangry, and Penny. It shows a complete refusal to stop chasing Doug until it has him cornered and dealt with by the Joy Joy Clones. Joy Kill, due to being an amalgamation of the original Joy Joy Gang, it's connected to the Joy Joy Clones, allowing them to transfer memories to the clones if needed.Īs with all of Malak's minions, Joy Kill is eternally loyal to him, especially due to the fact that it retains the original memories of the Joy Joy Gang used.ĭue to retaining the Joy Joy Gang's original memories, Joy Kill shows a complete desire to kill Doug for what he did to them, carrying with them some of the Joy Joy Gang's personality. Even when Doug uses another one to push him into molten metal Joy Kill simply comes back later without a scratch of damage on it. When Doug tried to use the crusher pistons on them again, it barely did anything outside of reminding Joy Kill to kill him. Joy Kill seems to be incapable of taking any visible damage from anything. These lasers do require various amounts of time to charge up, though, so they do become vulnerable while doing so.Īn ability retained from Lucky, Joy Kill is capable of jumping to any desired location regardless of its distance without any effort.Īn ability retained from Penny, Joy Kill is capable of summoning eggs from its Penny hand and throwing them at Doug to stun him.Īn ability retained from Hangry, Joy Kill possesses enough physical strength to swat Doug around like a bug, as well as using it to break through walls and other obstacles to get to Doug. Joy Kill uses two types of lasers: one small but quick laser shot by Lucky's head and three slower but longer ranged lasers shot by all three heads. Joy Kill is capable of shooting laser beams out of any one of their three heads, disintegrating anything they remotely touch. Although it has been shown that Hangry and Penny can control their respective arms on the fusion. While it is shown that each member can speak and think independently, it is unknown whether the body is controlled entirely by Lucky or by all three members in coordination. After all, that's not even their final form.īecause Joy Kill is an amalgamation of the three Joy Joy Gang Members, it does not possess its own personality. Joy Kill's arms are made from the arms of Penny and Hangry, including one unknown robotic arm that is implied to be Lucky's, but isn't confirmed because it seems to have five fingers.ĭon't celebrate just yet. At the back of the heads are large wire cables attached to the back of the main robot body. Lucky's head is located in the middle, with Penny's head located at his right, and Hangry's head located at his left. After the reconstruction of the animatronics, their body takes a more bulky metallic and robotic appearance, with the heads of the three located on top. Joy Kill is made from the destroyed parts of Hangry, Penny, and Lucky, most notably their heads. He absolutely nailed his assignment and got me intrigued all over again. For the brief time, the story does play out in Copenhagen, I have to highlight Ebriama Jaiteh who plays the drug dealer, Danny, tasked with training Miu. He plays a lawyer who does actually work for the criminals operating in Copenhagen. Chiang (Jason Hendil-Forssell) by feeding the corpses of his enemies to her pigs. And yes, good ol’ Zlatko Buric, who has been a staple in many Nicolas Winding Refn movies, is also in Copenhagen Cowboy as Miroslav. Then on to the Chinese woman, Mother Hulda (Li li Zhang), who works for the gangster Mr. One of the girls forced to work there is Cimona who is portrayed wonderfully by Valentina Dejanovic. From the Serbian woman, Rosella Dragana Milutinovic, who helps her brother run a brothel. Again, this is mostly true in the beginning. The cast is generally very strong and the characters are well-written. The only thing that really kept me intrigued was the way Miu interacted with the other characters we come across. However, having a title like “Faaborg Fighter” doesn’t have the same international appeal. However, describing the plot as “she traverses the ominous landscape of Copenhagen’s criminal netherworld” is far from being accurate.Īnd it really doesn’t matter, since the story is much more interesting (for me anyway) during those first three episodes when she’s far from the big city. At the very least, in the countryside.īy episode 4 of Copenhagen Cowboy, the main character Miu (portrayed in a strong manner by Angela Bundalovic, who many may recognize from the Netflix series The Rain) does actually go to Copenhagen. In fact, it begins in a part of Denmark that could almost be described as rural. I have spent a lot of time all over Copenhagen, and this Netflix series doesn’t really take place there. Being Danish, I undoubtedly watch Copenhagen Cowboy differently than international viewers, who have never been to Denmark. you can then remove the stockpile safely. the butcher's workshop should automatically get the task queued up, and a dwarf will begin hauling the corpse over to it. to get around this, i place a one-tile stockpile under a recent corpse, set its filter to "all", and then play the game for a moment. I have a stockpile for corpses but hauling to it seems like it's often the very last task my dwarves ever do, so the corpse will have already rotted by the time they get to it. dwarves won't even think about butchering corpses that aren't stockpiled. The corpse is in a stockpile or within a small radius of the butcher's workshop. The corpse was not a tamed animal when it was alive (or a sapient creature) I've heard it said that mangled or mutilated corpses of animals can't be butchered, but as far as i can tell this is not the case.Īccording to the wiki - and this matches my experience - to be butchered, a corpse must meet this criteria: If you have a butcher's workshop, and you haven't messed with the standing order settings, you can get your dwarves to butcher corpses fast by placing a stockpile under the corpse. It deals with the power of the female self, the temptation of both sexes, and in many ways the concept of religion- if sexuality and godliness can be part of a whole, instead of a taboo separation.įor fans of fantasy, LEGEND is a must-see. LEGEND is a very genuine film, from when genre features didn’t need tongue-in-cheek irony or to be “in on the joke” to sell itself to audiences. Unicorns, naturally, lend themselves to the sexual imagery Scott is adept at (ALIEN being one of the most graphically sexual film readings of all time) representing male and female iconography. Temptation, lust, and virgin purity are constants in LEGEND, with Tom Cruise’s Jack coming to terms with his sexual attraction to Princess Lilli and, eventually, his heartfelt love for her. Played with equal parts ham and malice.ĭarkness, here, attempts to seduce the Princess Lilli, who transforms from an ethereal beauty with glowing hair, flowing white gown, and silver tiara to a bride of the devil, with blackened eyes and gothic gown. Curry’s Darkness is a scene-stealer, as to be expected. Curry is of course known for his bombastic and sinister roles, including Pennywise the Clown in “Stephen King’s IT” and of course his roles in ROCKY HORROR, CLUE, and more. A storybook from before one could read.ĭarkness, played here by a towering Tim Curry with phallic bull horns spiraling from his head, cloven hooves at the bottom of muscular legs, an almost naked body with crimson skin tight over bulging muscles. LEGEND is how fantasy is envisioned, not written. Lush forests with dancing leaves and pollen, supple skin covered in glitter and sweat, lavish meadows with babbling brooks and crystalline springs, ominous and cavernous castles with wax pouring over candle sticks and dark thick pillars that extend upwards, seemingly into the pitch blackness of space. You, the audience member, are simply along for a ride- a vouyeur peering into an alien world- rather than a student studying the details or retaining any information. The story moves along at a pace that is sudden and methodical, never stopping to answer any questions or expand on any details. LEGEND is an entrancing film that feels like a drug-addled fever dream more than a traditional 3-act swashbuckling movie. They capture the Princess, and soon Jack must embark on a quest with the help of the forest fairies and elves to rescue Lilli, stop Darkness, and save the last living unicorn and the fate of the world itself. The goblins succeed in killing the last male Unicorn, but mistakenly leave the female alive. To do this, he sends his goblin minions, who run into a forest-dwelling wild man Jack O’Greene (Tom Cruise) and his enchanting lover, Princess Lilli (Mia Sara). Taking place in a mystical world, the Lord of Darkness (Tim Curry) seeks to plunge the world into eternal night by killing the last unicorns (guardians of light). LEGEND reminds us what the genre could truly be, and what we can still learn from it. While Netflix turned heads with 2019’s adaptation of THE WITCHER, fantasy has been in a somewhat stagnant state of being for the better half of the late 2000’s and 2010’s. I also found a more rich appreciation for it in an age where romantic-fantasy is more concerned about political allegory than more substantial subtext like gender, religion, and morality. Revisiting Ridley Scott’s 1985 fantasy epic LEGEND last week for the first time since I saw it in 2014, I was relieved to find the film as magical, dark, and entrancing as it was upon my first viewing. Today, you can go into the Farm & Fisherman and order a Tito’s and soda, yes, but you can also order a ramp Gibson with Stateside vodka, fino sherry, ramp brine, and a chive-blossom garnish, a gesture at the pickled onion garnish for a classic Gibson. He knew he couldn’t clear out the bar and start from scratch instead, he took the approach of developing guests’ trust over the years. In some cases, he forages the ingredients himself, tending a large garden behind the restaurant.Ĭhilds took over the restaurant’s bar program in 2016, at which point it was already established as a neighborhood spot. As the beverage director at the Farm & Fisherman Tavern in Cherry Hill, Childs intentionally builds his cocktail program to highlight ingredients foraged and sourced from local farms. This tension between trying to reduce a business’s environmental impact and running a bar where people want to hang out remains top of mind for Danny Childs, too. Hidden Still Agave Spirit is imported from Mexico in large plastic totes, then distilled and proofed in Pennsylvania, a process that requires less energy than transporting heavy glass bottles of diluted spirits.įrom left to right: Post Haste chef Elise Black, co-owners Fred Beebe and Gabe Guerrero / Photograph by Gab Bonghi “Sure, we could just not have agave on the bar, but people expect it, and we don’t want to scare people, so we felt like we needed to have it,” Beebe explains. After much discussion, Beebe and Guerrero decided to use Hidden Still Agave Spirit, which is produced in Jalisco, Mexico, but diluted and bottled in Hershey, Pennsylvania. But the logistics of building a cocktail menu are far more complicated than adhering to a line on a map. The broad rule Guerrero and Beebe have given themselves is that they’re sourcing everything in their bar program east of the Mississippi River - an admittedly large geographic area. Conversations like these remain a constant at Post Haste. “We would have these long debates about whether it was better to get tomatoes that were grown in a greenhouse but weren’t organic, or if we should get tomatoes from northern Mexico that were grown organically but were grown in a monoculture,” Beebe remembers. They worked to source as close to 100 percent of the ingredients as they could from local and organic producers. While in school, the college’s snack bar closed and the two students convinced the administration to let them take over the operation. Guerrero and Beebe met in college, where they were both interested in international politics and agriculture. It’s a key element in Post Haste’s program, Guerrero and Beebe say, allowing them to eschew industrially farmed fruit in favor of buying yuzu, kumquats and limequats from a small farm in New Jersey. Superjuice - a technique in which citric and malic acid are combined with citrus peel, macerated, then blended with water and the juice of those fruits, and finally strained - produces eight times more juice than classic squeezing. Instead, Post Haste’s drinks menu includes a variation on a Penicillin cocktail that swaps Scotch for whiskeys made in Pennsylvania and the Finger Lakes, plus rosemary smoke, ginger-honey syrup, smoked pear juice, and yuzu superjuice. This means no Scotch, no lemons, no limes, no Sysco trucks. In an effort to present more environmentally responsible drinking options to their customers, they have designed their beverage program to reduce the miles ingredients must travel. Post Haste, a new bar in Kensington from Gabe Guerrero and Fred Beebe, is one of a handful of Philly-area drinking establishments attempting to challenge the status quo around sourcing. It’s commonplace - and sometimes celebrated - for bars to source whisky made in Japan, mezcal from Oaxaca, and gin produced in the United Kingdom, shaken with juice from citrus shipped in weekly from Florida or maybe Mexico. In contrast to restaurants’ commitment to telling you where your food hails from, the same principles are rarely applied to bar programs. Now, in 2023, menus list farms and local cheese makers like they’re as familiar as the concept of roast chicken itself. You’ve surely heard the phrase “farm to table.” In the early aughts, servers at (mostly) New American restaurants waxed poetic about the provenance of a Lancaster half-chicken and its accompanying baby greens. The Pearnicillin cocktail at Post Haste, a new 70-seat bar on Frankford Avenue in Kensington that aims to source all of their ingredients from east of the Mississippi River to cut down on the fuel needed to transport liquor, citrus, and more.

COVID-Align, one of the efforts to combat the COVID-19 pandemic, is an online alignment tool based on a profile HMM estimated using HMMER and about 2500 high-quality SARS-CoV-2 genomes. HMM-based sequence alignment methods are gaining popularity nowadays. The scoring parameters are implicitly trained, and thus, the alignment methods based on HMMs do not rely on explicit scoring systems, which makes them independent of the empirical scoring methods described in Section 2.3. The first two problems are about how likely a given HMM could generate a sequence and how the HMM could produce the corresponding alignment, and the third problem is about how to build the structure and estimate the parameters of the HMM based on given sequences, which could be either aligned or unaligned. According to the three problems that are interesting when using HMMs, the adoption of HMMs in sequence alignment has three corresponding issues: the scoring problem, the alignment problem, and the training problem. In terms of sequence alignment, an HMM is a statistical model that describes probability distribution over biological sequences. In addition, the hidden Markov model (HMM) is also widely utilized in sequence alignment tools, such as HHalign, which can perform high accurate profile HMM alignment. Although heuristic algorithms do not guarantee that there will be no poor results, ideal alignments can be achieved in many types of software because the sequences to be aligned are usually quite similar. For this, the most widely applied method is to limit the state transition and conduct the alignment in a smaller search space. Heuristic algorithms can be used to reduce the time and space cost incurred by dynamic programming. As a space-saving strategy of the dynamic programming algorithm, the Hirschberg algorithm is able to complete alignment by the space complexity of O( l) without any sacrifice of quality.Īn optimal solution for the pairwise sequence alignment of very long sequences is usually impossible to find in practice. Such overheads are acceptable for short sequences but not for sequences with more than several thousand sites. Time and space complexity of pairwise sequence alignment algorithms based on dynamic programming is O( l 1 l 2), where l 1 and l 2 are the lengths of the two sequences to be aligned. The algorithm usually consists of two steps: one is calculating the states of the dynamic programming matrix and the other is tracking back from the final state to the initial state of the dynamic programming matrix to obtain the solution of alignment. A commonly used global alignment algorithm is the Needleman–Wunsch algorithm, which has become the basic algorithm that is used in many types of multiple sequence alignment software. The former is to find and align the similar local region, and the latter is end-to-end alignment. Pairwise sequence alignment is the basis of multiple sequence alignment and mainly divided into local alignment and global alignment. In order to be distinct from the previous work, this review will try to present a general overview of the algorithms that prevail in this field and cover the work of the last several years. There have been several reviews for multiple sequence alignment, such as Refs. In this review, the pairwise sequence alignment algorithms and the corresponding scoring system, heuristic algorithms for multiple sequence alignment and their defects, and quality estimation methods used to test multiple sequence alignment software are reviewed. Finally, a character matrix with the same number of columns and rows that correspond to the number of the sequences is obtained. Sequence alignment software usually inserts gaps between the nucleotides or amino acid residues in the sequences, so that as many similar sites as possible can be aligned. Phylogenetics, comparative genomics, and protein structure and function prediction all depend on sequence alignment to look for conserved regions. Sequence alignment is one of the basic tasks in the processing of biological sequences, and the accuracy of alignment affects the subsequent analyses. The increasing number of sequences are challenging the automated sequence analysis procedures. The developments in sequencing technologies have enabled unprecedentedly fast sequencing speeds and large-scale sequencing capabilities.
